Foaling Continued: The Work After Maternal Bonding

This video picks up at the end of yesterday’s post and it illustrates what we do AFTER the birth and bonding between mom and baby.  A portion of the “imprinting” is illustrated here.  I’m sorry it is so long but I thought you might like to see what goes on in real time.  Of course, I stopped it before the process was finished but tomorrow we’ll visit some of what comes next.  The mare’s behavior is typical here at Paradise.  We think it’s partially in the breeding but also has a lot to do with how the horses are treated every day by our staff.  These are dedicated people who love these horses almost as much as the clients who own them!

Actual Video Footage of The Birth of a Foal.

Notice in this video that the foal’s hind legs are still inside the mom and the umbilical cord is not yet broken.  We want the attachment with mom to last a few more minutes.  We believe blood and nutrients are still being shared and that enhances the bond.  This process took approximately 20 minutes or more but for brevity’s sake some of the footage where nothing much was happening has been eliminated.  Ordinarily we do not leave the halter and lead rope on the mare but after her water broke she laid down with her butt up against the wall and we had to move her.  When she laid back down the dangling lead rope seemed rather unimportant compared with what else was going on.

Predicting the Arrival of the New Foal!

In this video you’ll see how we test a mare’s milk to help us predict when the new foal will arrive.  Mel will perform the test to determine calcium content in parts per million.  When it reaches 200PPM for the first time the mare will usually foal within 48 hours.  When it hits 350PPM you’d better be ready!!!  It’s coming!!!

OK, here is some more video footage (this time without the lens cap on) that you might enjoy.  Primarily featured is Miss Jeannette Longley, long-time client of Paradise, made famous by the feeding of sweet tea to her mare, Denaasas Tap Dancer.  But, then, who could forget Lark Rise Magidaa, Maddi’s beautiful filly that’s getting ready to be shown in Andalusia, AL later this month!!!  Enjoy!

Enjoy Paradise Through the Eyes Of Client!

Today is a sad day with the loss of Infidels Imaara’s foal so I thought it appropriate to upload something that will lift our spirits.  Please enjoy this walk around through the eyes of one of our favorite clients, Mrs. Maddi Weeks.  We just gave her the camera and she did the rest.  Yes, it’s really just how it all happened.  The clip was actually over 32 minutes long but we’ll have to play the rest of it at a later date.  Thank you very much Maddi.  We LOVE you!!!

As The Time Approaches…What to Look For and Do

In this video you’ll see mares who are getting close to foaling.  You’ll see some of the things we do every day in the preparation and checking of the mares’ progress as they approach their due dates.  You’ll see how the udder develops as the time nears.  You’ll see things you should watch for if you keep your mares at home for foaling and you’ll even see Gabby.  She’s a little on the large size.

Our congratulations go out to world famous Psychic Counselor, Sharon Johns, whose abilities have been utilized by law enforcement, including the FBI, and recognized by all major television networks, on her purchase of the beautiful Scapa son out of Finolas Jamila. It makes you wonder if her psychic powers might have had an impact on this acquisition!

Mom and Baby in the Early Morn

Here’s a look at Bethany just walking into the stall with a mom and baby early in the morning.  Notice how the mare is perfectly fine with her “intruder” (that would be Bethany).  Also notice how eager the colt it to come and visit as soon as Bethany kneels down.  Because the horses here at Paradise are handled so much, and get so much positive human interaction, they are eager to visit with people.  Just give them a chance and they’ll be all over you!  Enjoy!
